公路运输按照车辆装载的货物形态由整车运输与零担运输两部分构成。与大型物流企业的零担货物运输相比, 由于中小型物流企业众多，因而零担货物运输的物流网络体系也更为发达。</div>

从业务的发生时间上看，整车运输呈现任意与随机的状态。整车运输一般没有固定的业务时间，司机接到货主的发货请求后发车接货。而零担运输的服务时间则较为固定，易形成定时、定点的专线、卡班运输。</div>

从货物情况与装卸要求来看，整车运输的货物更多为大宗货物运输，没有过高的装卸要求，中途不需要专门的停靠与收集货源。而零担运输的生产组织工作比整车运输要更为复杂与细致。但是需要承运人确定货物重量、负责保管和组织装卸，运输企业必须配备一定的仓库、货棚、专用车辆、装卸和搬运工具等货运设施，占用较多的人力、物力与财力。</div>

超重货物可以采用重载汽车、火车进行运输。随着运输技术的迅速发展，已有一些运输公司为迎合客户运输需要，设计出了专门运输大型机械设备的新型运输工具，例如飞艇，运输超重设备，超大机械不必再为方便运输而牺牲质量。</div>
